Video passthrough?

It seems to me as if video passthrough is not possible on AppleTV. Or at least, even if I set "Conversion quality" to say 20mbit/s and the video in the file is way way lower than that, Air Video HD server still converts. This seems strange to me, and I'd really like something like iOS where you can select to passthrough if video bit rate < conversion quality setting.


I would really need this since my AppleTV is on the same network as the server so bandwidth is no issue, but my server hardware is not the fastest -> on large video files I get frozen video now and then when the server hardware cannot keep up the conversion.

Is this with Apple TV app or using Air Play? Is the video in H.264?

I'll reply. Yes, any video in h.264 has cutted quality. In another players with hardware decoding and loading files through smb the picture is much much better. Try to watch any anime in 1080p or 720p and you'll see banding on gradients.
